Bringing home a new puppy is exciting, but those first few weeks can also bring plenty of questions. We created The Goldendoodle as a resource for Old Mill Doodles families as they prepare for their puppy and begin life together.

Here you'll find practical information about puppy-proofing your home, vaccinations, potty training, bell training, choosing your puppy, and establishing good habits from the beginning.

We've been raising dogs since 1989 and Goldendoodles since about 2005. Over the years, we've learned that preparing families is every bit as important as preparing puppies. A little planning before Gotcha Day can make those first days at home easier for everyone.

Start Before Your Puppy Comes Home

The best time to prepare for a puppy is before you need the information.

Take some time to explore the resources on this site, particularly puppy proofing, vaccinations, potty schedules, bell training, and our tips for selecting your puppy. You don't need to master everything before Gotcha Day. The goal is simply to have a plan and know where to come when questions arise.

And remember — puppyhood doesn't last forever. Enjoy the fluff, the silliness, the learning, and even a little bit of the chaos. You're beginning a relationship that we hope will bring your family many happy years together.

A Little About Goldendoodles

Goldendoodles combine many of the qualities we love about Golden Retrievers and Poodles. They're intelligent, affectionate dogs that generally enjoy being part of family life.

Their intelligence also means they learn quickly — including things you may not have intended to teach them! Consistency, patience, reasonable expectations, and plenty of positive interaction go a long way toward helping a puppy become a wonderful family companion.

Every puppy is an individual. Coat, size, personality, energy level, and learning style can vary, even among puppies from the same litter. Getting to know the puppy in front of you is part of the fun.
